Athonet provides airports with Private 4g and 5g Network for operational use

Communications are a critical component behind the scenes of every airport that allows millions of passengers to travel safely every year. Airports have historically relied on voice communications (i.e. PMR or “walkie-talkie”) for their operations but the rising number of passengers, the need for greater efficiency (lower costs), greater security and more sophisticated digitalized services now make secure broadband data communications a fundamental requirement.

Private LTE or 5G provides the ideal solution and Athonet is currently deployed at one of the largest European airports to provide a such a solution for its operational use to cover nearly [50,000 users]. The airport transits more than 60 million passengers a year and covers more than 30 square kilometers.

The solution is also being rolled out at its sister airport in the city and regional airports managed by the same airport operator.

Athonet EPC is the professional-grade core network for a simple and effective solution, offering benefits to both staff and their organizations. It gives the opportunity to be used with any radio solutions to provide complete, tailored cellular coverage throughout the airports.

A private LTE solution clearly met their broadband communications, full mobility, reliability and security requirements. It also gave the local control and visibility of the data network such as user-defined IP addressing, network segmentation and access that is difficult to provide from a macro network.

Conclusion

Athonet provides a fully managed service for the mobile operator for the core network. A virtual NOC gives the mobile operator full visibility of all KPIs and alarms at this deployment as well as aggregated views across all of its private LTE deployments across multiple airports. 

Athonet’s core network and IMS platform allowed the airport operator to provide the customer with a solution that met all its requirements for scalability, reliability and full set of features but yet giving the required level of visibility, control, self-service and affordability the customer required. 

Moreover, the airport operator also operates a twin airport in the city and several other airport and public infrastructure facilities across the country. Athonet was able to provide a geo-redundant solution across the twin airports in the city as well as providing a highly scalable and modular solution to deploy and manage services at multiple other sites across the country.
